In just his second season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, head coach Bill Peters has been named a finalist for the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as the WHL Coach of the Year.

“That’s a reflection on the players and the staff,” Peters told  reporters on Tuesday morning.

“Our staff has done a great job all year, our guys worked really hard. So that’s more of a reflection on them than anybody else.”

That’s awesome, he deserves it,” said Canes defenceman Caden Price.

“He’s a great coach, so that’s good news.”

The Canes saw results this season under Peters including having their best regular season ever since 2016-2017 with a 42-21-3-2 record, he oversaw a tight defensive system identity that was fourth best in the league with the fewest goals given up at 199 and guided the Canes to the best penalty kill in the league at 82.2 per cent.

Lethbridge went on a streak where they won nine straight games in January and in the middle of that swept a mini-U.S. division tour.

Peters coached four Canes to breaking the 20-goal mark including Brayden Yager, Logan Wormald, Brayden Edwards and Leo Braillard.

Peters also saw defencemen and team captain Noah Chadwick lead the backend with 53 points (13 goals, 40 assists).

Peters is up against Willie Desjardins (Medicine Hat), Dan Dasilva (Saskatoon Blades), James Patrick (Victoria Royals) , Brad Lauer (Spokane Chiefs) and Matt O’Dette (Seattle Thunderbirds) for the award.
