Seventy-two of the top high school students from across the country will gather in Hamilton later this month for the fifth annual Canadafootballchat.com (CFC) Prospects Game that is being co-hosted with TSN.
There will be local flavour at that game as Catholic Central wide receiver Blake Schafer made the roster.
“It’s amazing,” said Schafer.
Schafer says he wants to show off what he has to offer to bigger named schools.
Schafer has been training five days a week in preparation for the game.
“Just because I made the team, (it) doesn’t mean that I gotta slow down,” said Schafer.
“If anything it means I gotta pick it up more and gotta work hard.”
The selection process was done by an eight-city tour across the country that saw players compete in a 40-yard dash, shuttle and vertical and broad jump events.
With players coming in from everywhere, Schafer said the pressure was on.
“All you can really do in a situation like that is put out 110 per cent,” said Schafer.
Schafer’s focus at the game isto showcase what type of person he is both as a player and personally as an individual.
“The CFC Prospect Game is all about setting the foundation for future success at the college and pro level, said Duane Forde, CFL on TSN analyst in a release.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity for top high school prospects from coast to coast to test their skills on the national stage against the best from other provinces, under the tutelage of some of Canada’s best university coaches. It also allows Canadian football fans to familiarize themselves with the next Chuba Hubbard, Kurtis Rourke, Chase Brown or Brady Oliveira before they become household names. This is a can’t miss game for hardcore fans from across the country.”
CFL on TSN panelists Davis Sanchez and Milt Stegall will each be on the sidelines as special guest coaches.
The game goes on May 24.
Schafer was given a starting role in his sophomore season this year with Catholic Central as a Grade 10 player.
He was the main target as he caught the most balls, he led the way in catches and was tied atop the list for the most touchdowns caught this past season.
Schaefer won the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year and Top Scorer awards for his efforts.
“(It) shows me that all my work’s starting to pay off,” said Schafer.
His aspirations is to play Division I football in the States once he is done high school.
