Canes lose Norrie in Expansion Draft

While the Lethbridge Hurricanes weren’t picking in the first round of the WHL draft on Wednesday, the club was busy on another front.

Lethbridge participated in the Expansion Draft for the Penticton Vees who are set to kick off their inaugural season this fall.

Forward Cameron Norrie was selected by the Vees from the Canes in the draft.

“It’s tough to lose Cameron in the Expansion Draft,” said Peter Anholt, Canes general manager, in a release.

“ He was a player that showed a lot of growth in his game as this season went along and filled important roles for our club this year with injuries along the way.”

In 56 games last season as a rookie, Norrie produced eight points and he appeared in five playoff games where he was a minus one.

The Canes will be busy on the second day of the WHL Draft today where they will have six selections.

Those selections include two in the fourth round and one pick each in each of  the seventh, eighth, ninth and 11th rounds.

Lethbridge will also select at 23rd and 24th overall in Thursday’s U.S. Priority  Draft.

Meanwhile,  Canes prospect Easton Daneault was announced as the Canadian Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year on Wednesday.

This is the second Rookie of the Year award for Daneault this season after he won it in  the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

Daneault spent this past season with the AJHL’s  Drumheller Dragons where in 54 games during the regular season, he amassed  56 points, 60 penalty minutes and had seven points in 11 playoff games.

He led the league’s rookie scoring , finished second in team scoring during the regular season and was tied for seventh in league scoring.

The Red Deer product appeared in six regular season games for the Canes and had an assist in his debut on Dec. 27 against the Calgary Hitmen after signing with the team in the same month.

Once his season done was done with Dragons, he joined the Canes for the rest of the season and played in eight playoff games where he had two assists.

He is expected to make the Canes main roster next season.
