Local lacrosse player Austin Sheen made Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) history at the Jr. B Tier II level with his Southern Alberta Chaos team recently.
On May 4, Sheen, who is now in his fourth and final season with the Chaos, scored a second-period goal in that game to reach 304 career regular season RMLL Jr. B Tier II points (141 goals, 163 assists) in 49 regular season games to become the all-time regular season points.
He broke the previous record of 303 points that was set by the Vermilion Roar’s Kegan Bowman at least 10 years ago in 71 games.
“I was shocked because I thought I was still quite a ways away from it,” said Sheen, who didn’t find out until the next day that he got the record.
Sheen talked about what the road was like through those 49 games in chasing the record.
“Every year I found new ways to shoot or just trying to change-up different things, or watch videos on older games and see what I could do better and every year my point total (has) always gone up a little bit ,” said Sheen.
Sheen spoke about how his teammates helped him get to the historical feat.
“They’re just very supportive and everyone’s always trying to help each other out,” said Sheen.
Producing points was not always Sheen’s main focus.
“I like to strive towards team success over personal success,” said Sheen.
“He’s a hard worker,” said Jared Capner, Chaos head coach, on how he thinks Sheen was successful in getting to the historical mark.
“He shows up to every practice, he does what we ask them to do, he’s bought into the systems. He’s not just a goal scorer, he’s a passer as well, so he gets a lot of the points from his ability to see open guys and kind of read the play. And then on top of that, he’s one of our marquee guys as far as being able to put the ball in the net.”
Capner considers Sheen a shifty player.
“He’s not relatively big in size as far as height and weight but he’s a good mix of speed and physicality. That allows him to fight for position to get open,” said Capner.
With the Chaos being around for only four years, Capner said it’s a huge accomplishment
“Austin’s been with us since day one and he’s been a huge part of that ability to grow and helped put the Chaos on the map ,” said Capner.
“The rest of us are all kind of just sitting back now and watching to see what he’s gonna do this season and kind of where he’s gonna leave off with the point total.”
Mike Medhurst, RMLL Jr. B Tier II commissioner, sees the league being helped more with the publicity Sheen gets on what he achieved.
“That does demonstrate there were good players, there are good players and there’ll be continuing good players coming out of all of lacrosse in Alberta,” said Medhurst.
Sheen will have a chance to pad his points lead with 13 regular season games left.
This was not the first milestone for Sheen has he was the first player in Chaos history to hit the 100-point mark in 2023.
