Chinook recognizes post-secondary commits

Chinook High School recognized the post-secondary  athletic signings of  a couple of their now graduated senior girls volleyball players who either have embarked on or will be going on  a new journey with  their athletic endeavours on Thursday during a media event.

Alexis Davenport has committed to playing in her own backyard with the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s volleyball team starting this fall.

Between having friends on the Kodiaks already and her funeral home job is why she chose the Polytechnic.

“So, I thought it’d be nice to reconnect with some old teammates and play another season with them,” said Davenport.

Davenport was intrigued by the team’s energy.

“All the girls connect really well,” said Davenport.

“I went to one practice and immediately connected with all the girls.”

Davenport will be fighting for playing time as she is up against four other middles on the Kodiaks roster.

“I’m definitely gonna have to put some work in to get some playing time,” said Davenport.

Davenport was interested in the programs at  the Polytechnic.

“I like how diverse their school is,” said Davenport.

Davenport will enrol in general arts and sciences.

Mya Lawrence, who graduated from Chinook grad last year,  initially committed to  the Medicine Hat College Rattlers women’s volleyball team last fall and joined the team for second semester this past season.

“It (was) very exciting because I had a hard time finding a school to play for,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence sent E-mails to post-secondary teams all over western Canada  while she was in Grade 12, and there were no fits for her as teams were not looking for liberos and it was while attending the University of Lethbridge this past fall that she got a response.

“I was at the U of L, and they (Rattlers) emailed me back and  I was like, ‘Oh yeah, perfect,’ and I had a spot,” said Lawrence.

It turned out the Rattlers happened to be looking for a libero.

“So I thought it was a perfect chance for me,” said Lawrence.

“It was my position and it would  work out great.”

Lawrence  is working towards a major in psychology with a minor in kinesiology.

Davenport spoke about what she anticipates the rivalry to be like with Lawrence.

“It’ll be  really interesting for sure with her being back row and me being a  front row player,” said Davenport.

Lawrence looks at the rivalry with Davenport  and other girls  on the Kodiaks as something that will be fun.

“I know a lot of the girls on the team, since I played with them a lot,” said Lawrence.

“It’ll also be like … I wanna beat them more.”
