With the Southern Alberta Summer Games (SASG) now just over a week away in Taber, Team Lethbridge feels preparations are on track and the athletes are full of excitement heading into the event.

Olivia Olivieri, Team Lethbridge regional director, has experienced plenty of excitement from both the athletes and the coaches.

“Lots of people (are) eager to get to the games,” said Olivieri.

“The schedule just came out this week as well for each of the sports and there’s been lots of excitement, now knowing when everyone will get to compete.”

Olivieri spoke about her approach as regional director is making the experience exciting for the athletes as the SASG near.

“My goal as the regional director was to keep everything organized,” she said.

“So, communicating with the athletes and their families and then that also helps build the excitement.”

Olivieri is looking forward to seeing the athletes coming together as one to represent Team Lethbridge.

“Meeting their goals or trying a sport for the first time,” said Olivieri.

“Just seeing everyone happy and enjoying sport together.”

Team Lethbridge has an array of athletes, from the youngest being six years old all the way up to participants in their 60s going to the games and are mixed in with many returning athletes.

“I would say badminton, pickleball and swimming are three of our most popular,” said Olivieri.

Team Lethbridge also has athletes registered in archery, track and field, golf, cribbage, E-Sports, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball and soccer.

“I wanted to take on the role because of my passion and interest for sports and then seeing how the Summer Games are an event that bring everyone together,” said Olivieri.

When athletes pick up their packages next week at the Lethbridge Sport Council Community Toom, they will have 12 chances to win vouchers in lucky athlete packages from various sponsors for their events and or store.

There will be some more added local flavour to the event as Canada 3×3 basketball player and Olympian Kacie Bosch will be speaking at the opening ceremonies on July 2.

The SASG are from July 2-5. in Taber, and Lethbridge will have 330 athletes competing.
