Zach Trempner is no stranger to traveling for his hockey career.

The 24-year-old Lethbridge product will take his talents overseas this fall after signing a professional contract with Muik Hockey in Nykarleby, Finland.

In an interview with the Herald, Trempner says he wasn’t quite ready for the sun to set on his hockey career.

“During my last year of collegiate hockey in Vermont, I was pondering the idea of continuing my hockey career. I think I realized to myself that I wasn’t quite done with the game. I sought out some representation and was lucky enough to find a solid agency in 3V Sports Management out of Ontario. They started talking to different teams in Europe and we’re very fortunate to find an awesome place in Finland where I can go and continue my hockey career professionally.”

Trempner grew up playing his minor hockey in Lethbridge, something he credits for his development as a hockey player.

“It was an incredible experience. We had a very competitive group of 2000s, 2001s and in the 1999 (age) group. Growing up, it’s an iron sharpens iron scenario.” Trempner said. “I felt like my development thrived in LMHA and I was fortunate enough to have a very victorious final year with that last year midget, and we won a lot of hardware. I think it just propelled my competitive juices to find more ways to win and to try to find a higher level and continue to compete. I think that’s something that LMHA was pushing from the get-go is to not only enjoy the game, but to continue growing as a person and a player.”

After graduating from the U18 ranks, Trempner suited up for four junior teams, each in a different league across three seasons. He started his junior hockey journey on Vancouver Island with the Campbell River Storm. After a brief appearance with the Steinbach Pistons in Manitoba, Trempner found his way to Espanola Express in Northern Ontario. He would finish his junior hockey career with the Notre Dame Hounds in Saskatchewan.

Trempner recently completed his collegiate hockey career with the Castleton University Spartans, an NCAA Division III school in Vermont. In 89 career games as a Spartan, Trempner notched 15 goals and 28 assists while serving as the team’s assistant captain for three seasons.

Trempner says traveling across North America for his hockey career made him more willing to pursue a professional career overseas.

“Living away from home since I was 17 has essentially brought me to this point. It made me more apt to want to jump on this opportunity and understand how incredible the experience is going to be that I’m going to get over there. It’s one thing to pursue a professional hockey career and get the hockey side of it taken care of. Playing overseas, you get an incredible life experience and get to live in a new culture.”

Other Lethbridge products that are playing professional hockey include Ridly Greig (NHL, Ottawa Senators), Dara Greig (PWHL, Montreal Victoire), Spencer Kennedy (Kalamazoo Wings, ECHL), Grayson Constable (Coventry Blaze, EIHL), Brandon Davidson (HC Kometa Brno, Czechia) and Spencer Machacek (Grizzlys Wolfsburg, DEL).
