The Calgary-based Silvertips Major Female lacrosse team captured the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse’s League Major Female provincial championship over the weekend in Ponoka with a Lethbridge player on the roster.

Genna Medhurst was a part a Silvertip team that won their first-ever provincial gold medal in her second season.

“Emotions were definitely very high for both players and coaches this weekend I think, and it was great to come out on top,” said Medhurst.

Medhurst suited up in two of the four games in her position on defence at the provincial championship.

“So, our head coach, Robin (Finley), he always says that ball movement wins games, but defence wins championships,” said Medhurst.

“So, it was definitely really exciting to see that he trusted me with such a difficult and stressful task.”

The Silvertips had a 16-0 regular season heading into the provincial tournament and that was a motivating factor for them to do well.

“That was definitely a factor in why we were so excited and ready to take on provincials (is) because we had an undefeated season,” said Medhurst.

The Silvertips finished the season 19-1, which  included the provincial where they had a record of 3-1.

Medhurst made the jump from Lethbridge lacrosse to the Silvertips two years ago where she attended a practice before she committed to the five-year program and affiliated for a game that year before becoming a full-time player last season.

She also went to open practices for other teams before deciding.

“The Silvertips actually stuck out to me the most because of just how welcoming they are to everybody,” said Medhurst.

It was a fulfilling feeling for Medhurst to transfer over to female lacrosse after playing boys lacrosse for 10 years in Lethbridge.

“There’s just something so fulfilling about being able to play sports with women that have been through similar circumstances as you,” said Medhurst.

In terms of learning, Finley thinks of Medhurst as a bright light for the Silvertips.

“I’ve actually learned some things from her as she’s been learning sort of more advanced defence,” said Finley.

I was like, ‘Wow, I’ve coached for 30 years, I never thought of it that way Genna.’ So, she gave me some comments that has helped teach other players the concepts as well.”
