It’s started out great, but it did not end well for the Lethbridge Jr. Bulls 14U team in their 16-13 loss to Team Quebec in their second game of the Junior Canadian Little League Championship at Spitz Stadium on Thursday Morning.
Team Quebec got on the board first with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Jr. Bulls stormed back with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-3 lead and would build up an 11-5 lead going into the sixth inning.
The sixth inning is where the wheels fell off for the Jr. Bulls as they surrendered seven unanswered runs and were down 12-11.
Quebec added four more runs in the seventh inning and the Lethbridge would add two more to get to the final score of 16-13.
“Quebec’s a really great team (and) credit to them,” said Will Sharpe, Jr. Bulls coach.
“They’re very disciplined, they play a lot of small ball, so they put a lot of pressure on us defensively. When a team can do that, it creates a lot of opportunities in the game.”
The Jr. Bulls were having one of those days where it had its ups and downs.
“We got off to a really good start and then we slowed down a little bit, and then we battled back a bit and then we slowed up a little bit,” said Sharpe.
Lethbridge desire to win more is what they learned after the loss.
“There (were) no smiling faces after today’s game,” said Sharpe.
“Everyone was upset, and they were frustrated but that’s just because they have high standards for themselves and that’s what I like.”
A short memory is important for the Bulls.
“If you let off the gas a little bit, we gotta forget that it happened and we just gotta keep moving forward,” said Sharpe.
Lethbridge had 13 hits and Quebec had nine hits in the game.
Coen Lencucha led the way for the Jr. Bulls with threes runs batted in and two hits in three plate appearances.
Starting Lethbridge pitcher Santiago Sanchez gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking three batters.
Madrick Boucher led Quebec with two hits, while he and Mathias Audette Vera drove in two runs each.
Ludovic Aubin started the game for Quebec where he surrendered five runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The Jr. Bulls opened the championship with an 11-10 victory over Team B.C. on Wednesday.
Ontario beat Alberta 13-1 in Thursday’s second game.
Lethbridge hosts Team Alberta today at 1 p.m. and the day will begin with Quebec playing B.C. at 10 a.m.
All games are at Spitz Stadium.
