Both of Lethbridge Football Club’s U17 team entries that attended the Canada Youth Cup National Showcase in Halifax over the August long weekend both came out with a medal from the event.
The LFC U17 girls team edged the Halifax County United FC 2-1 in their bronze medal match on Monday.
For the LFC U17 girls team, it ended off successful tournament where they had a record of 3-1.
“The girls really went and showed up and knew that they wanted to represent well,” said Janet Clamp, LFC U17 girls head coach.
“Throughout the tournament they played with all of their hearts, and lots of effort and really came out with a bronze because of a great team effort.”
The U17 girls found out as the tournament went on that they were in tight games that were equally matched.
“It was really great just to go into every game knowing that it’d be a fairly competitive effort,” said Clamp.
What the girls enjoyed most about the experience was that they were able to be together.
“I heard a lot of girls coming out of games saying ,‘Hey, that was really fun.’ And I think that comes from the fact that they played so well together as a unit, ” said Clamp.
A component of the CYC was having university scouts watching the players.
“For a lot of these girls, knowing that people are watching them, excites them and helps to encourage them to step up their performance,” said Clamp.
A couple of LFC U17 girls were awarded for their efforts at CYC as Laryn Hyggen and Taylor McLaren took home tournament all-star awards and McLaren also won the goalkeeper of the tournament award for the U17 girls level.
The U17 girls will now prepare for provincials in a couple of weeks time.
LFC’s boys team knocked off the Newfoundland representative 2-1 in their bronze medal game on Monday and finished with a 2-2 record.
U17 boys goalie Nathan Adamson received the goalkeeper of the tournament award for U17 boys , while he along with teammates Nathan Clarke and Jayden Egharevba were selected as all-stars.
The LFC U15 girls finished sixth while the boys team finished in seventh place.
LFC U15’s Maiya Halma and Claire Praskach were named all-stars, while Rowen Egharevba was named an all-star for the LFC U15 boys.
The CYC allowed LFC to play other teams in the country play in front of post-secondary and professional teams and be evaluated and scouted for possible future endeavours in the sport.
