The Taber-based regional Southern Alberta Chaos Junior B Tier II lacrosse team fell just short of a provincial title this season but overall, it was a successful season for the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League club.
The Chaos had their best season since their inception in 2022 as they had a record of 18-4, which was a combination of regular season and playoffs, and made it to the provincial championship final last weekend where they lost to the Lloydminster Extreme 9-8.
This marked a season of progressing in the right direction for the Chaos as they made it to the provincial final after going winless in last year’s provincial, getting ousted in the second round of playoffs in 2023 and getting eliminated in the first round in 2022.
“ We’re making progress every year and the guys are buying into the systems every year and they’re exceeding our expectations of what we try to do at the beginning of the season ,” said Jared Capner, Chaos head coach.
The Chaos offence’s ball movement is what shone through this season.
“They ( the offence) see the floor a little better, they’re a little bit more heads up,” said Capner.
The defence was older and more experienced.
“They know what to expect a little bit more,” said Capner.
Capner saw the goaltending improve this season as they picked up Swift Current’s Cameron Greenley who took on a bulk of the load in games and was a big step for the team.
Lethbridge player Austin Sheen finished out his career with the Chaos by holding RMLLÂ records for total career points, goals and assists and is second all time in points per game.
He was the RMLL points leader for two years in a row for all divisions and second all-time in points per year.
Sheen also holds the record for most playoff points.
“Austin’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of player,” said Capner.
“So, to have a guy like that as a fifth year … who has a major presence in our offence and within in the team, he’s a good guy … for our younger guys to look up to for the future of what we’re going to have for the season. Chaos over the next couple of years here.”
He has led the team in scoring in all four years.
Sheen hit the team’s first-ever individual scoring milestone when he reached 100 points in 2023.
