Two local hockey sisters, Dara and Kyra Greig , are giving back to the local young female hockey community next week through their inaugural DKG Hockey Development Camp.
“It’s been a goal and a dream of me and my sister’s for a long time to grow women’s hockey in Lethbridge because growing up there wasn’t a ton of female hockey players ,” said Dara.
“ We thought it’d be really cool to start our own hockey camp specifically just for girls because I don’t think that’s really been done in Lethbridge.”
The sisters’ focus is to get to know all the players that are attending and develop them.
“We’re gonna try to fit as much into that week as we can and give them as much of our knowledge of the game as we possibly can,” said Dara.
The sisters want to emphasize to players that hockey allows for the opportunity to play in other places.
“If they’re serious about it and start at a young age, the opportunities are endless to continue playing after minor hockey ,” said Dara.
There will be four age groups of U9, U11, U13 and U15/U18 that will be participating in the Development Camp next week.
The DK Hockey Development Camp runs from Aug. 11-15 at Cavendish Farms Centre.
Dara currently plays for Montreal Victoire of the Professional Women’s Hockey League and is a former collegiate player at Colgate University and the University of Wisconsin.
Kyra coaches with the Southern Express program , and with an Okotoks team and is a former player at the University of Lethbridge.
