Raymond’s Pippa Gibb can now say she is a national champion as she was a part of Team Alberta’s women’s basketball team who repeated as champions at the Canada Summer Games(CSG) in St. John’s on Saturday.
Alberta defeated Ontario 62-54 in the gold medal game which capped off a tournament that they went 5-1 in.
“I think it was our connection on and off the court,” said Gibb, on what led to Alberta’s success.
“We’re all really good friends, we laughed, we had fun and that just translated on to the court.”
Gibb thought Alberta had determination in the gold medal game.
“We just really wanted to win,” said Gibb.
“We made sure we locked down on defence and I think that led to our offence.”
Gibb spoke about what her experience was like playing other provinces.
“I have played against some of the girls, so it was really fun just seeing them again and being able to compete,” said Gibb.
Gibb did receive words of advice from older sister Delaney, who won gold at the 2022 CSG in Niagara.
“She just told me to enjoy the experience and just have fun,” said Gibb.
“She just said trust in yourself (and) trust in your team.”
Donna Branch, who is an assistant coach with the University of Lethbridge’s women’s basketball team, was a part of the Team Alberta women’s basketball team as manager.
Team Alberta women also won gold at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.
Gibb is going into her first year of high school sports with the Raymond Comets.
Team Alberta’s men’s basketball team also won the gold medal
Another notable finish from the first week at the CSGs was from Alberta’s Women’s Rugby 7s team, who had locals Keegan Brantner (manager) and players Madi Kutsch and Shanelle Mann, and won a bronze medal.
