The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s soccer team have been on the pitch for a couple of weeks preparing for the upcoming ACAC season and will look to their experience to lead the way this year.

The women have a vast majority of their players returning this season and have some university transfers joining the squad.

Head coach Michael Racz spoke further as to how that experience will help through the highs and lows in games during the season.

“We have a really good culture here on the girls side and I think the experience within the squad helps continue that forward,” said Racz.

“There’s always adversity  in a season and I think that the experience helps us weather it a little bit easier than if we were a little bit younger.”

The  strength for the girls will be their ball control in terms of keeping the ball.

“I think defensively and in terms of our possession, we’ll be able to frustrate teams that way and look to create opportunities through that ,” said Racz.

Racz did not want to make any predictions of where the girls will finish in the standings.

“I’m not going to make any predictions until I see everybody on the girls side,” said Racz.

Megan Morrison is going into her fifth and final year with the Kodiaks and sees this year’s version of building off last season with a majority of the roster returning.

“We have that connectiveness, we know how each other play, and everyone’s really hard working, and we’re all open to feedback,” said Morrison.

The tenacity the team showed is another aspect the team can grow from.

“With Mike being the new coach it’s really nice,” said Morrison.

“ So, we can get a new look with similar players and he’s really pushing us passed how we’ve done in the past ,said Morrison.

The Kodiaks played three exhibition matches last weekend in Edmonton where they went 1-2

“So, (we) got better as the weekend progressed and considering we only had three days of prep before that, I think things are looking pretty good,” Michael Racz, Kodiaks head coach.

The Kodiaks play two more exhibition games before opening the regular season on Sept. 6 at home versus Olds College.

The Kodiak women’s finished third in the ACAC South Division with an 8-4 record last season and lost out in the first round of championships to Keyano.
