Barrel racer Pamela Morrison took home her fourth consecutive title on the SMS Tour this season after claiming her first Lethbridge and District Pro Rodeo title in the Ladies Barrel Racing after the rodeo was over on Saturday night.
Morrison’s score on Thursday night of 15.08 held up through the last two days of the rodeo to give her the victory and total earnings of $2,998.60.
This was a redemption win for Morrison as it was a year ago at the same rodeo that her mare, Dyna, had a great ride, however, it was Morrison who tipped a barrel to lose the rodeo.
“When I came back to the rodeo this year, I was very excited to run her as I knew she kind of liked that arena,” said Morrison.
“It was kind of funny because as I went around a second barrel, she bumps the barrel going into it. And I looked down and I could see it falling towards me as she turned to leave the barrel , and I stuck my toe out to hold the barrel up and it just tilted back up.”
Morrison found out she had won the Ladies Barrel Racing after she had pulled over on her way home to B.C. to watch the final round on Saturday on The Cowboy Channel.
“My stomach was in knots waiting for it to finalize ,” said Morrison.
“Winning a rodeo with the level of competition that we deal with these days is just absolutely unreal.”
This is the second year back in the rodeo arena for Morrison as she was away for the previous 10 years before that after being in a snowmobile accident in 2016.
“Last year was my very first year back and I have such an amazing mare, that I was able to qualify for the Canadian Finals,” said Morrison.
“This year I had a couple injuries (to start) my season and (in) the second half of the year, we’ve just picked it right up and been on this hot streak of winning rodeos.”
A main reason that Morrison came back was because it was a piece of her life that she felt was missing.
“The more I got away from it, the more I realized that I needed it back in my life and I think that’s what made my drive back that much stronger,” said Morrison.
Zeke Thurston took home the Saddle Bronc Riding title with a score of 87.5 points, Denver Leitch won the Bull Riding with 87 points, Quade Hiatt won the Tie-Down Roping title with a time of 7.8 seconds, Ryan Shuckburgh won the Steer Wrestling title with a time of 3.7 seconds, the Team Roping title went to the duo of Jeremy Buhler and Brayden Parker as they had a time of 4.5 seconds and Kylie Whitside won the Breakaway Roping title with a score of two seconds.
Big Tabacco Racing won the Relay Racing.
