The Lethbridge Hurricanes names Logan Wormald as  their 33rd captain in franchise history on Tuesday morning.

The fifth year forward takes over the captaincy reigns from defenceman Noah Chadwick, who wore the ‘C’ last season , and has departed for the professional hockey ranks in the Toronto Maple Leafs system.

“Super honoured,” said Wormald to the media on Tuesday.

Wormald spoke about what leadership qualities he will bring in the captain’s role.

“I feel  like my on-ice play is probably my biggest leadership quality,” said Wormald.

“Obviously, on the bench I like to talk to guys too.”

Wormald learned captaincy qualities from previous captains Chadwick, Joe Arntsen and Jett Jones.

“Plenty,” said Wormald, on what he learned from them.

“Those guys were amazing captains … They all lead in different ways, whether that’s on the ice, or just in the locker room or on the bench. But, yeah, obviously hoping to take in some of those leadership qualities and bring those to this team.”

Wormald is coming off a career-high in points last season with 70 and is committed to playing at Nebraska-Omaha next season.

Wormald will have fellow 20-year-olds Matteo Fabrizi and Shane Smith, as well as  Luke Cozens as assistant captains.

 “Great leaders,” said Wormald.

“Fabrizi and Shane have been in the league for quite some time now and have proved themselves as leaders in this room already (and) same with Coz. Coz (has) been in the league for I think two or three years now, but he’s took a big leap in his leadership qualities and super awesome for him.”

Smith thought the organization made the right call  to make Wormald captain.

“He’s been here for five years, he’s been through the organization’s ups and downs and  couldn’t ask for a better captain this year,” said Smith.

Smith was honoured to get a letter for the first time  the WHL this season.

“It doesn’t necessarily define your leadership, you can be a leader without  a letter, but it’s definitely a huge accomplishment,” said Smith.

Fabrizi is coming into his first year with the Canes after coming over in an offseason trade from Prince Albert Raiders, where split last season with them and the Red Deer Rebels.

“I’m a quieter guy but I show up and do the right things every day,” said Fabrizi.

Cozens is honoured to represent a great team and take on a leadership role with the many young players on the team.
