The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks soccer teams are in the later stages of their regular season and while the girls have stayed consistent near the top of the standings, the men are still looking to find a happy medium in their game.
The Kodiak women are having a strong season with a 5-2-1 record, are sitting third in the South Division and sit four points clear of fourth-place Medicine Hat College.
“The experience that we have on our team is one of the reasons why we’ve had so much success,” said Michael Racz, Kodiaks soccer head coach, on the women’s team.
“ When games open up and we’re able to play, I think that’s when we have the most success.”
Fifth-year Megan Morrison has made a tremendous impact on the women’s success this far into the season.
“When games open up and she’s able to find space in the middle, she really shines through in her performances with us,” said Racz.
Racz has liked how the Jankowiak sisters of Khloe and Kiara have stepped up and helped the team.
“Kiara Jankowiak has been in net and she’s made some big saves that have kept us in games,” said Racz.
Khloe has acted as the engine in terms of making the team go.
“I talked a little bit about how we’ve kept possession in big games even against stronger teams and I think a part of the reason for that has been Khloe’s play,” said Racz.
Racz wants to see the women’s team capitalizeon winnable games with four games to go in the regular season.
“ If we can continue to pick up points against the teams that we should be picking up points against and if we have a positive performance against SAIT, I think that’s going to be critical for us,” said Racz.
The Kodiak men sit in third in the South Division with a 2-3-2 record with three games to go in their regular season and are still searching for satisfaction in their game.
“We haven’t been satisfied but that’s because I think we know we’re better than what we’re showing on the field,” said Racz.
“We’ve had good individual performances from some players but I think we’ve struggled to put it together in terms of a good team performance.”
Moe Huska has led the way this season on the men’s side.
“He’s very calm and collected under pressure,” said Racz.
Racz applauded the efforts of Cristobal Jacob Pares for keeping ball possession for the team in the middle.
Racz wants to see the men’s team come together and build, not over doing it individually on the pitch and spreading the load around in these last couple of games.
Medicine Hat and SAIT are expected to be tough tests in their remaining games.
“I think getting positive results in some of those games will really help build in that confidence going into championships,” said Racz.
He hopes the men can find a way to score more goals in the stretch drive of the season.
Both Kodiak teams have automatic byes into the ACAC championships as they will be hosting them from Oct. 23-26 in Raymond.
