The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s volleyball team’s success will come from understanding their culture and  by having collective efforts this season.

“Our  biggest thing is really just as a collective working on skill development and really getting guys to understand our culture again because we do have a relatively new group,” said Greg Gibos, Kodiak men’s volleyball head coach, on preparation.

“Jordan (Teliske) and I as coaches have really been trying to set the tempo and rhythm of what we think this team’s identity should be and how we want them to grow not only as young men but as volleyball players and as people in our community.”

The Kodiaks have paid more attention to detail in preparation for this season after losing in the league championship final to Red Deer Polytechnic last season.

“I think that’s the one big takeaway from all of this is details always make the difference,” said Gibos.

“I think when you look at what Red Deer did so exceptionally well every single year is really (taking) care of those small details that are a part of every season. We’ve taken a big lesson from that and understand that everything needs to be intentional.”

Gibos thinks there is different identity when it comes to this version of the team having success.

“I don’t think we have a superhero we can rely on to put the team on their back,” said Gibos.

“This year, it’s gotta be much more of a collective effort and I think that has its pros and cons. I think obviously we need more athletes to be playing their best every single night and that’s the exciting part. It’s going to allow some more people to thrive and more people to grow and get put into those roles.”

The Kodiaks will have a roster of a lot of returnees and first years that have a high-flying mentality.

“I think it’s going to be a lot more competitive for roster spots every night, again just because we do have a lot of great athletes in here,” said Gibos.

It does not matter who is on the roster, the Kodiaks go into every season with being one of the best in the country.

“We want to be in the mix,” said Gibos.

“We’re not going into the season … like  hey, it would be nice to make playoffs. It’s we want to be there when the chips are on the line at the end of the season again.”

The Kodiaks host the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder today at 5:30 p.m. to kick off a new ACAC season.
