The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s basketball team opened a new Canada West season with an 80-70 defeat at the hands of the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday night at Co-op Centre for Sport & Wellness.

“Really good first effort,” said Dave Waknuk, Horns head coach.

“That’s a tough team, that’ll be a team that’ll be playing  for medals at the end and I think for us to come out first game … and hang with these guys and hang as long as we did, I really like it.”

Waknuk liked the chemistry through the 15 assists that were produced in the game.

“That’s a great number in our league, it means we’re sharing the ball, it means we’re finding scorers,” said Waknuk.

The Horns had multiple players with double figures in points.

“So, we’re a balanced attack, we know that,” said Waknuk.

The downfall in the game was the 30 turnovers given up.

“You had moments where you gave up 5-0 runs or 7-0 runs in a minute or two minutes because of turnovers,” said Waknuk.

“So, you’re beating yourself and that’s the tough part.”

Despite the loss, Courtney McKee liked the effort brought forth by the team.

“I was super happy with our effort and we had really consistent energy,” said McKee.

“We’re a really new team, we haven’t played together that much, so I was really happy with the fight that we gave to a much older team that is more experienced together.”

McKee thought for the first game the chemistry was good.

“Our preseason was pretty  good, so coming into it we all felt good and connected like we were on the same page,” said McKee.

McKee led the Horns offence with 21 points.

The Horns and Dinos play again tonight at Co-op Centre for Sport & Wellness with tip-off at 5 p.m.

The Horn and Dino men’s game was still in progress as of deadline.

Those teams will square off again tonight at 7 p.m.

Men’s soccer

The Horn men’s soccer team’s  season ended at Canada West Championships in the quarterfinals on Friday, as they lost to the University of Victoria 2-1 on penalty kicks after regulation  time and two overtimes did not solve anything.

UVic scored four times while the Horns scored once in the shootout.
