Lethbridge Hurricanes rookie 17-year-old forward Lukas Lima is relishing the new environment with his new team after being acquired from the Everett Silvertips in the offseason.
“All the boys have been great (and) all the staff have been very welcoming, so it’s been fun so far,” said Lima.
Lima comes into a situation where he is a part of a bigger group of younger players on this roster that will develop together.
“I think all of us are like-minded, I think we all want to get better, so that helps us push each other each day,” said Lima.
Lima has been focusing on day in and day out on reducing his turnovers.
“Little mistakes that (a) guy coming into the league is going to make,” said Lima.
“If I just keep using my resources, coaches (and) videos, I think I’m going to turn it on here.”
Lima has suited up in 12 games so far this season and is still looking for that elusive first point.
“I feel I’m being a lot more confident with the puck,” said Lima.
“I think as (the) season keeps going here hopefully I’ll find the back of the net.”
He is a minus 10 in those games.
Lima considers being with the Canes a fresh start, especially being a full-time player.
“Just being here, it’s what I’ve been working for, for the last … four years now since I’ve been going up through Delta (Hockey Academy) and BWC (Burnaby Winter Club),” said Lima.
Lima has some prior knowledge of the WHL after working the Silvertips over the last number of seasons.
Lima played in three regular season two season ago as an affiliate player while skating in three exhibition games over the last two seasons.
“I was there quite a bit at 15 (and) not very much last year as a 16-year-old but obviously I took away some things from all the veterans there like Austin Roest (with) always being on time to the rink, being early (and) always doing (everything) to 100 per cent ,” said Lima.
The Langley, B.C. product spent last season with the Canadian Sport School Hockey League’s (CSSHL) Burnaby Winter Club U18 Prep Team where he collected 30 points (15 goals, 15 assists) and added another three points in three playoff games.
“The coaches in BWC were really good,” said Lima.
“ Mike (Santorelli) made sure to keep me accountable for little mistakes. I think him doing that really made me into a complete player.”
“I think Lukas is carving his niche out in the league,” said Matt Anholt, Hurricanes head coach
“He’s a good-sized forward that can forecheck hard and hits hard. I think he’s slowly but surely figuring that out, it’s not easy, but it’s been a slow burn.”
Lima had a career year with the CSSHL’s Delta Hockey Academy U17 Prep team two seasons ago where he set a career high in points with 44 (24 goals, 20 assists).
