The Lethbridge Hurricanes are set to salute the military during  their annual Military Appreciation Night on Friday.

The WHL club will host a special pre-game ceremony to honour military members of the past and present  who either have fought or currently are fighting for freedoms days before Remembrance Day, while veteran Richard Chevrier will sing the national anthem ahead of puck drop.

“I think it’s really important for all of us to honour and remember those who are currently fighting for us and for those who have lost their lives in fighting for us ,” said Kathy Hong, Hurricanes marketing and communications director.

“I think it’s always important just to remember our history and to share that with our fans and especially with our players and staff as well.”

Richard Drought, the Legion’s Sergeant-at- Arms talked about the importance of getting the Legion’s message across to young hockey players.

“It’s huge because a lot of young hockey players may not have had any family members or recent family members that have been involved in the military,” said Drought.

“It shows them what it’s all about, where it comes from and the Legion is a huge supporter of what the military does.”

A military member does the ceremonial puck drop every year.

“The two captains that come out to meet the member, it’s an eye opener for them (in) that here’s somebody who has signed the line to say I will give my life for my country,” said Drought.

Jonathan Butler from the 20th Independent Field Battery will drop the puck this year.

“I wanted somebody who had served overseas,” said Drought.

The Legion will be on hand to provide information about what they have to offer and local cadets will hand out poppies.

“The biggest thing we want to get across is that we do not sell the poppies, we hand them out to people,” said Drought.

“We wish to see everybody wearing a  poppy and no cost involved.”

The Lethbridge Herald provided tickets to hand out to military members and cadet programs in the city.

Puck drop between the Hurricanes and Wheat Kings on Friday night is at 7 p.m. from VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
