In a one game winner-take-all , the Chinook Coyotes varsity girls volleyball team captured the School Sport Alberta 5A South Zone banner after they defeated the LCI Clippers three sets to two (25-20 (Chinook), 21-25 (LCI), 25-19 (Chinook ), 18-25 (LCI ) and 15-11 (Chinook),in front of packed gym at Chinook High School on Friday night.
“Super excited,” said Jared Quan, Coyotes head coach.
“It’s so good to have the banner back in the gym.”
The difference in the match for the Coyotes were their hitters.
“Our hitters didn’t shy away, they kept swinging hard, they made clutch plays when it mattered and we came out lucky,” said Quan.
Quan noticed the girls were able to come back from adversity throughout the match.
“They went down and didn’t get rattled,” said Quan.
“They were able to compose themselves and comeback and we’ve been working on that all year.”
Bonding will be the key for next weekend’s provincials.
“Getting that bond tighter (and) wanting them to play for each other,” said Quan.
Senior co-captain Bobbi Whipple felt a sense of excitement and was proud of what her teammates were able to accomplish.
“I think we’ve played our hearts out and it was just an incredible experience overall,” said Whipple.
The energy the team came with and the togetherness the players displayed were key to success.
“We really supported each other out there and really came together as a team,” said Whipple.
The LCI and Chinook varsity boys teams played in the game after for the 5A South Zone banner on that side and LCI won three sets to two.
5A South Zone winners earned provincial championship berths at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer from Nov. 27-29.
While the losing teams do not immediately earn spots in provincials, there is a possibility of qualifying through one of the six 5A wildcard spots.
The wildcard spots will be finalized by Sunday night when the final provincial rankings come out.
