The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks men’s basketball team picked up a pair of home wins over the weekend to finish first semester with a 7-3 record and a tie for second in the ACAC’s South division.
Lethbridge Polytechnic (LP) began the weekend with an 87-76 win over the University of Alberta-Augustana (UAA) Vikings on Friday.
“We played a very consistent basketball game,” said Ryan Heggie, Kodiak men’s basketball head coach.
“We had a little bit of a let down (in) the last five minutes but we were up 20 plus (points) and we had a little trouble with some of their defence they put on the last bit.”
Nathaniel Hosannah led the Kodiaks with 28 points, six rebounds and drained 12 field goals on 19 attempts.
He, along with teammate Marley Kenion, converted on 75 per cent of their free throws and had six steals a piece.
Lethbridge made 41 per cent of its field goals, 39 percent of their three-point shots and drained over 78 per cent of their free throws.
Lethbridge followed that victory with an 88-63 win over a NAIT Ooks team, who were ranked in the top 10 nationally for three straight weeks recently, on Saturday.
“We played a complete game,” said Heggie.
“We overcame some adversity with a couple of injuries (from) the night before and then during the game too. It shows that we have good depth in our program.”
What helped LP in the game was their eight assists, which was higher than normal for them, and collecting 12 steals.
“We shared the ball really good,” said Heggie.
Hossanah led Lethbridge with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three steals.
Randall Mongord was a perfect five-for-five from the free throw line.
The Kodiaks made 47 per cent of their field goals, over 26 per cent of their three-point shots and shot over 76 per cent from the free throw line.
The Kodiak women’s basketball team ended the semester with a pair of home losses on Friday and Saturday to drop to 4-6 on the season and to sixth place in the South division.
The women suffered a 60-49 loss to UAA on Friday.
“Augustana hasn’t lost yet and I thought we played them pretty tough,” said Ken McMurray, Kodiak women’s basketball head coach.
“Our defence was pretty strong. We just had a lapse in the fourth quarter and couldn’t score for about six minutes.”
Chase Wells-Creighton drained 16 points and had seven rebounds while Summer Long and Zoe Michelson each had three steals for the Kodiaks.
Long had a perfect six-for six from the free throw line.
LP made over 23 per cent of their field goals, 15.4 per cent of their three-point attempts and almost 79 per cent of their free throws.
LP then lost to 89-52 to NAIT on Saturday.
“We laid an egg,” said McMurray.
“We couldn’t score, and we couldn’t defend and it was not our brightest moment.”
Michelson scored 14 points, Nyomi Heins had five rebounds and Gaby Power had four steals for the Kodiaks.
Heins and Long had six turnovers each.
LP made 27.5 per cent of their field goals, 11.8 per cent of their free throws and nearly 74 per cent of their free throws.
Volleyball
The Kodiak men’s volleyball team split their road matches to complete the first semester with a 7-2 record.
Lethbridge opened with a three sets to one win over UAA on Friday and followed that with a four-set loss to NAIT on Saturday.
The Kodiak women’s volleyball team fell to 1-8 on the season after being swept in three sets in both of their matches against the same teams the men played.
Pronghorns
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team split their road games at Trinity Western University (TWU) over the weekend to finish the first semester with a 4-8 record.
The Pronghorn men opened with a 77-70 win on Friday and followed with an 87-64 loss on Saturday.
As for the Pronghorn women, they dropped their games to TWU by 87-66 and 70-57 scores on Friday and Saturday respectively to finish first semester with a 2-10 record.
