The Lethbridge Hurricanes ended this past weekend with a splash on the trade front as they shipped 20-year-old captain Logan Wormald to the Spokane Chiefs for four draft picks on Sunday.
Wormald was drafted 45th overall in the 2020 WHL Draft by the Canes and had 243 points (99 goals,144 assists) in 266 regular season games and it was in 27 playoff games that he collected 14 points.
“Yeah, hard day,” said Hurricanes GM Peter Anholt to reporter on Monday, on how difficult it was to move Wormald.
“(He) represented us in so many good ways (with) leadership, competitiveness, hockey sense (and) got better even with his size being a bit of a negative, it never affected him in any way shape or form.”
Anholt spoke about the importance of moving him to a competitive team that can win.
Logan and I had conversations even in the summertime about things,” said Anholt.
“He felt that if he was gonna get moved that he would (have) preferred to go to the west just because he’s from Langley and to finish off in a conference that is different for him.”
The Canes received two 2026 third-round picks, a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2028 fourth-round pick in the WHL Prospects Draft for Wormald.
“Pretty good return,” said Anholt.
“When you’re making deals, it’s one of those things where it’s all on timing and if you wait too long maybe the return isn’t the same or maybe it’s a lot better or maybe the player gets injured. So there’s lots of things that come into play.”
The Hurricanes are now up to 10 selections and possibly a conditional first round pick from a trade with the Kelowna Rockets in the first seven rounds of the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft as result of the trade.
“We traded a lot of assets to build that team last year and we needed to recover picks,” said Anholt.
“That’s basically your lifeline to continue to grow your team and we’re pretty fortunate to have really put ourselves in a pretty good position now at the draft to continue to add some good draft picks.”
Now that Wormald has been traded, the Canes will look to for both young and veteran players to step up.
“Somebody has to step up, said Anholt.
“Whether you’re an older player or a young player, I don’t care, step up and compete and lead in your own way.”
Wormald was ranked in the top-20 in all offensive categories during his time with the Canes and was the co-winner of the team’s Most Valuable Player Award and won the Three Star Award last season and was named Rookie of the Year in the 2021-2022 season.
