The Lethbridge Hurricanes began their three-game road trip with a 7-3 defeat to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday night.
The Wheat Kings got the scoring going 1:32 into the game when Joby Baumuller cut into the slot and beat Canes goaltender Koen Cleaver with a wrist shot.
Nicholas Johnson collected the assist on Baumuller’s 17th goal of the season.
Jordan Gavin capitalized on a rebound to give Brandon a 2-0 lead 15:37 into the opening frame, with the assists going to Baumuller and Johnson.
Luke Mistelbacher took a cross-ice pass from Chase Surkan in the offensive zone and his wrist shot beat Cleaver 1:34 into the second period to give the Wheat Kings a 3-0 lead.
Lethbridge product Carter Klippenstein got the other assist on Mistelbacher’s 19th goal of the year.
Gavin tipped in a pass from Surkan in tight on the powerplay to give Brandon a 4-0 lead 1:11 later.
Jaxon Jacobson got the other helper on Gavin’s goal.
The Canes made a push in the third period as they strung together three straight goals to bring the score to 4-3.
First Easton Daneault’s centering attempt from behind the net went off a Brandon defender and in 1:03 into the third period from Kade Duell.
Hudson Kibblewhite then jammed the puck in when shot off the end boards came to him to cut Brandon’s lead in half to 4-2 5:09 into the third period.
Nathan Maloney and Luke Cozens collected the assists.
Cozens then brought the Canes to within a goal when he buried a wrist shot off a pass from Gavin Lesiuk 8:44 into the third period.
Klippenstein’s wrist shot from the left wing found its way to the back of the net 11:41 into the third period to give Brandon a 5-3 lead.
Mistelbacher and Surkan assisted on the goal.
Baumuller doubled the Wheat Kings lead with an empty-net goal from Gavin 17:51 into the final period.
Klippenstein redirected in a shot with 1:41 to go in the game to make the final score 7-3 Wheat Kings.
Nigel Boehm assisted on the goal.
Brandon outshot Lethbridge 43-24 in the game.
Lethbridge (10-20-0-1) continues the road trip against the Saskatoon Blades (15-13-2-0) on Friday night.
