Yesterday, The City of Lethbridge joined the Strong Cities Network, a global coalition of over 270 municipalities working together to reduce hate, extremism and polarization.

Strong Cities Network supports governments by providing training, expertise and practical tools.

One of the resources Strong Cities hosts is the Prevention Academy Canada project which is funded by Safety Canada.

Lethbridge has been invited as one of only 10 cities across the country to participate in the inauguration of the project, which provides free resources to communities respond to growing challenges such as addressing local hate and extremism online and offline; building community resilience through partnerships support and digital literacy; and strengthening long-term prevention with clear plans and effective communication.

Mayor Blaine Hyggen says keeping Lethbridge safe and healthy is a key priority for the city and joining the Stronger Cities Network will provide resources to city employees to strengthen their ability to keep Lethbridge a safe and welcoming community.

“Being part of the Strong Cities Network and Prevention Academy helps our staff build skills and partnerships that prevent hate and division before they grow.”

This work also enhances ongoing initiatives led by Community Social Development (CSD) to strengthen community safety through preventative approaches.

These approaches include: the continued implantation of the Community Wellbeing and Safety Strategy (CWSSS) including a citywide blueprint for improving health, safety and quality of life; Administration of Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) funding which invests in local prevention-based programs; and the advancement of the federally funded Building Safer Communities program, which focuses on reducing risk factors for violence and crime in youth.

Andrew Malcolm, general manager of CSD says while there is already great work being done to support safety in Lethbridge, being part of the Strong Cities Network adds another layer of support.

“It connects us with practical ideas and real-world experience from other cities, bringing even better solutions to our community.”

An update on several community safety initiatives will be presented at an upcoming Standing Policy Committee (SPC) meeting.
