The Lethbridge Hurricanes are finally back in the win column.
Lethbridge snapped an eight game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over the Regina Pats at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Friday night.
Assistant coach Ryan Aasman says the Hurricanes were glad to break the skid in front of the home crowd.
“Just happy for the guys. It was really nice to see a celebration at the end and a crowd salute and to do it at home ice I think was really important. The fans support (and) tonight was great and it’s been great the whole year with home games. I thought the second period kind of came off our details in spurts. The first period was excellent. We played with a ton of pace and made some plays, but I thought throughout the whole night it was just good to see us create some stuff and then also skate without the puck and defend hard at times.”
Oli Chenier’s first goal as a Hurricane would open the scoring for Lethbridge just 2:10 in. The former Prince Albert Raider would find a loose puck off a broken play and make no mistake for his fourth goal of the season. Jake Evans and Matteo Fabrizi provided the helpers for Lethbridge.
Regina would respond at the 10:56 mark as Dayton Deschamps would strike for his first goal of the campaign to knot the score up at 1-1. Dayce Derkatch and Connor Bear had the assists.
Under two minutes later, Chenier would restore the lead for the Hurricanes. After speeding by a Pats defender, the 18-year-old Winnipeg product would get a clean cut shorthanded breakaway and he would make no mistake for his second of the game. Fabrizi picked up the lone assist.
The second period was a tale of two halves. Caden Brown’s 21st of the season would tie the game for Regina at the 8:49 mark and it appeared the Pats would take control of the game.
However, it would be the Hurricanes breaking through to take the lead at the 14:37 mark as Andrew Petruk would strike for his fourth goal of the season. Will Scott provided the lone helper.
The goal marks a new career high for Petruk. His previous career high was three which he had done twice previously.
Just over a minute later, Taber’s finest Kade Duell would strike on the power to double the Hurricane lead. Kayden Longley and Easton Daneault provided the helpers.
Before the period could finish, Lethbridge would strike one more time. Tyden Lafournaise would be sprung on a 2-on-1 break with defenceman Kyle Heger and the 16-year-old decided to take the shot, beating Pats netminder Marek Schlenker for his eighth goal of the campaign. Longley and Heger had the helpers.
With just over a minute to go in the third period, Lukas Lima would break through for his first career WHL goal coming on the power play. Evans and Chenier provided the assists.
Koen Cleaver made 30 saves in goal for Lethbridge to earn the victory, snapping a personal 10 game losing streak. Taylor Tabashniuk allowed four goals on 17 shots for Regina before being replaced by Marek Schlenker who stopped six of the eight shots he faced.
Aasman says Lethbridge was just focused on the process and playing the game the right way.
“I think it’s just important that we stop talking about wins and losses and you flip completely on worrying about your process. It’s about keeping that buy-in and keeping guys engaged through it. It’s just good to finally get some success by doing things the right way. It helps with your buy-in and taking a step forward.”
Lethbridge returns to action next Wednesday when they welcome the Saskatoon Blades to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena for the second and final time this season. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
