The Lethbridge Hurricanes couldn’t overcome a slow start on Wednesday night, falling 7-2 to the Moose Jaw Warriors at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

“I didn’t like it.” Hurricane assistant coach Ryan Aasman told the Herald in a postgame interview. “Obviously, there’s no excuse for it. You got a team that played an afternoon game, but still had to travel. They played the night before. We’re rested. There was no need to be flat and non-competitive in certain areas tonight. And I thought that went for the whole game. We expected a better start. We shouldn’t have put ourselves in that predicament. We need to see a little bit more team toughness off the hop.

Less than a minute in, former Hurricane Kash Andresen would give the Warriors an early lead. The 18-year-old gathered his rebound at the mouth of the crease and slid it five hole through Koen Cleaver for his 10th goal of the season. Jan Trefny had the lone assist for Moose Jaw.

The Warriors would double their lead at the 6:53 mark as Casey Brown would get Cleaver cleanly with a wrist shot for his 18th goal of the campaign. Trefny picked up his second point of the night with the only helper on the play.

Kade Duell’s 15th goal of the season brought the Hurricanes within one at the 16:14 mark beating Warrior netminder Chase Wutzke through the five hole. Easton Daneault had the lone assist.

Daneault would tie the game with his 11th goal of the season from a sharp angle at the 11:27 mark. The 17-year-old would fire a shot nearly even with the goal line from the left wing corner that would fool Wutzke to draw the Hurricanes even. Duell and Kyle Heger had the helpers on the play.

Brown would double dip to restore the Warrior lead late in the middle frame at the 16:30 mark. From below the left circle, a quick snap shot from the 19-year-old would find the space between Cleaver’s shoulder and the crossbar.

Just over a minute later, former Hurricane prospect Colt Carter would tuck home a ricochet off the glass for his eighth goal of the campaign to restore a two goal advantage for Moose Jaw. Nolan Paquette and Pavel McKenzie had the helpers on the play.

Moose Jaw would extend their lead to three just over a minute into the third period as overager Ethan Semeniuk would bury his 15th goal of the season. Paquette had the lone assist.

Another former Hurricane would burn Lethbridge as Aiden Ziprick would tally his 16th goal of the season on the power play to extend the Warrior lead to four. Connor Schmidt and McKenzie had assists on the play.

Dominik Pavlik added a goal late for Moose Jaw. Koen Cleaver made 23 saves in goal for Lethbridge, while Chase Wutzke made 28 stops for the Warriors.

The Hurricanes return to action on Friday night when they welcome the Swift Current Broncos to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
