Canada’s Marielle Thompson wins third straight World Cup ski cross race

VIGO DI FASSA — Canada’s Marielle Thompson raced to victory Saturday in a World Cup women’s ski cross race.

Thompson, from Whistler, B.C, picked up her third straight win on the circuit after sweeping a pair of races last week in Veysonnaz, Switzerland.

Thompson has five gold medals and one bronze this season and leads the overall women’s ski cross standings with 681 points. She has 36 career World Cup victories.

Marielle Berger Sabbatel of France was second and Courtney Hoffos of Invermere, B.C. was third.

India Sherrett of Cranbrook, B.C., was fourth as Canada had three of the four skiers in the women’s big final.

In the men’s event, Ryan Regez of Switzerland won gold, followed by fellow Swiss Alex Fiva and Germany’s Florian Wilmsmann. Calgary’s Reece Howden was seventh.

Competition continues Sunday with another round of races in the Italian Dolomites.
