WHL: Brayden Schuurman’s heroics lead Thunderbirds to 7-6 SO win over Chiefs

SPOKANE — Brayden Schuurman scored the shootout winner to lift the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 7-6 win over the Spokane Chiefs on Friday in Western Hockey League action.

Schuurman had two goals and two assists in regulation, including the game-tying goal with 29 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Coster Dunn, with a hat trick, and Hayden Pakkala also scored for Seattle (28-33-4-1). Grayson Malinoski made 41 saves.

Sam Oremba, Cameron Parr, Shea Van Olm, Andrew Cristall, Brayden Crampton and Brody Gillespie replied for Spokane (44-20-1-2). Dawson Cowan stopped 24 shots.

Gillespie’s goal at 11:43 of the third period put the Chiefs ahead 6-4 before Dunn responded at 16:58, setting the stage for Schuurman’s tying marker.

RAIDERS 3 BLADES 2 (OT)

SASKATOON — Brayden Dube capped a two-goal effort with the game-winning score 1:38 into overtime as the Prince Albert Raiders topped the Saskatoon Blades 3-2.

Harrison Lodewyk netted the game-tying goal 14:53 into the third period for Prince Albert (38-23-5-1).

David Lewandowski and Zach Olsen replied for Saskatoon (37-22-4-4).

SILVERTIPS 5 WILD 0

EVERETT, Wash. — Shea Busch scored twice, Jesse Sanche had a 19-save shutout and the Everett Silvertips cruised to a 5-0 win over the Wenatchee Wild.

Landon DuPont, Dominik Rymon and Cole Temple added the others for Everett (47-12-4-4), which scored four times in the opening period.

Brendan Gee stopped 47-of-52 shots for Wenatchee (23-36-7-1).

ROYALS 6 COUGARS 3

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. — Teydon Trembecky had two goals and two assists in leading the Victoria Royals to a 6-3 win over the Prince George Cougars.

Markus Loponen, Logan Pickford, Cole Reschny and Nate Misskey also scored for Victoria (40-17-3-7).

Riley Heidt, with two goals and Carson Carels replied for Prince George (40-21-4-2).

WHEAT KINGS 7 PATS 3

BRANDON, Man. — Joby Baumuller and Marcus Nguyen each scored two goals and the Brandon Wheat Kings earned a 7-3 win over the Regina Pats.

Jaxon Jacobson, Luke Shipley and Matteo Michels also scored for Brandon (37-23-4-3), which scored six combined goals between the final two periods.

Caden Brown, Zach Pantelakis and Ephram McNutt replied for Regina (16-43-5-3).

AMERICANS 4 WINTERHAWKS 2

PORTLAND, Ore. — Max Curran had one goal and two assists in leading the Tri-City Americans past the Portland Winterhawks 4-2.

Jackson Smith, Carter MacAdams and Savin Kirk also scored for Tri-City (32-27-6-1).

Diego Buttazzoni and Ryan Miller responded for Portland (36-27-3-1).

HURRICANES 4 OIL KINGS 2

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — Brayden Edwards scored two first-period goals as the Lethbridge Hurricanes defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 4-2.

Kash Andersen and Leo Braillard added the others for Lethbridge (42-20-3-2).

Josh Mori and Niko Tsakumis scored for Edmonton (36-27-2-2).

BRONCOS 5 WARRIORS 3

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. — Luke Mistelbacher had two goals and one assist to power the Swift Current Broncos to a 5-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Ryan Gould, Parker Rondeau and Brady Birnie also scored for Swift Current (35-29-1-2), which got out to a 4-0 edge less than 15 minutes into the opening period.

Lynden Lakovic, with two goals, and Owen Berge replied for Moose Jaw (14-45-6-2).

GIANTS 1 BLAZERS 0

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Cameron Schmidt’s 40th goal of the season at 12:12 of the second period gave the Vancouver Giants a 1-0 win over the Kamloops Blazers.

Burke Hood earned a 30-save shutout for Vancouver (33-26-8).

Logan Edmonstone stopped 20-of-21 shots in two periods before Dylan Ernst entered for the final frame and made five saves for Kamloops (24-38-4-1).
