League-leading AFC Toronto thumps second-place Vancouver Rise 7-0 in NSL action

TORONTO — Esther Okoronkwo and Kaylee Hunter each scored twice and AFC Toronto piled up six second-half goals in a 7-0 thumping of the Vancouver Rise on Saturday in Northern Super League soccer action.

Kaela Hansen, Sarah Stratigakis and Jade Kovacevic also scored for Toronto (13-6-2), which opened up a nine-point lead over Vancouver for top spot in the six-team league standings.

Sierra Cota-Yarde picked up the clean sheet as Toronto dominated Vancouver 15-1 in shots on target.

The Rise (9-6-5) had won their last four games and were unbeaten in their last eight heading into Saturday’s match.

Earlier Saturday, the Ottawa Rapid (8-6-6) moved two points back of Vancouver for second place with a 1-1 draw with the last-place Tides (3-12-4) in Halifax. Megumi Nakamura opened the scoring for Halifax in the first half before Florence Belzile drew Ottawa level two minutes after halftime.

Later Saturday, the Calgary Wild (6-11-2) hosted the Montreal Roses (8-6-5).
