NCAA committee proposes extended transfer window proposal to 15 days for student-athletes

By Canadian Press on September 30, 2025.

College football authorities are seeking to extend the proposed notification-of-transfer period from 10 days to 15.

The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Oversight Committee suggested the revision on Monday.

The committee had initially recommended a 10-day window from Jan. 2-11. After receiving feedback from athletes, the proposal is being adjusted to 15 days, from Jan. 2-16.

The current window is a 20-day period from Dec. 9-28, creating challenges for fall athletes competing in the postseason. The new proposal would allow for athletes competing in playoffs on or after Jan. 12 to be granted a five-day period beginning the day after their team’s final game.

The FBS Oversight Committee has not yet reached a decision on the 30-day window allowing student-athletes to enter the transfer portal following the departure or dismissal of a head coach.

Earlier in September, the Division I Administrative Committee approved the elimination of the spring transfer window. That committee will review the new proposal on Oct. 7-8.
