Selena Sturmay surges in Olympic curling pre-trials with a double-win day

WOLFVILLE — Selena Sturmay picked up two wins Wednesday in the Home Hardware Curling Pre-Trials

The Edmonton skip earned a 7-6 victory over Saskatchewan’s Nancy Martin in the morning draw before capturing an 11-5 decision over Saskatoon’s Ashley Thevenot in the afternoon draw.

Sturmay’s record improved to 4-1, leaving her behind Victoria’s Kayla MacMillan (4-0) in the standings. MacMillan’s squad remained unbeaten with an 8-2 win over Krista Sharf of Thunder Bay, Ont., in the early draw.

In other games, Thevenot defeated Danielle Inglis 8-7, Brandon Calvert got past Jay King 12-9, Jordon McDonald beat Owen Purcell 9-7. Sam Mooibroek edged Mark Kean 10-9. Scott Howard earned a 7-4 win over Jean-Michel Ménard and Beth Peterson secured a 10-4 decision over Myla Plett.

Howard topped the men’s standings with a 4-1 record. Calvert, Menard, McDonald and Mooibroek were all tied for second at 3-2.

The men’s and women’s finals will each be a best-of three starting Saturday.

The men’s and women’s winners of the pre-trials join the Montana’s Curling Trials fields next month in Halifax.

The trials determines Canada’s teams for February’s Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy.
