Canadian women eye hockey gold-medal final; speedskaters, skiers aim for medals

MILAN — Canada’s women’s hockey team is one step closer to playing for gold as it takes on Switzerland in the semifinals and eyes will be set on speedskating for another potential short-track medal on Day 10 of the Milan Cortina Olympics.

The women’s hockey squad is coming off a 5-1 quarterfinal win over Germany on Saturday to advance, with captain Marie-Philip Poulin having made her return from injury. Canada defeated Switzerland in its opening game 4-0 on Feb. 7.

Meanwhile, Moncton’s Courtney Sarault, Kim Boutin, of Sherbrooke, Que., and Florence Brunelle, of Trois-Rivières, Que., will compete in the women’s 1,000-metre short-track speedskating event. Sarault has a silver in the mixed team relay and bronze in the 500.

In freestyle skiing, the women’s big air final features Canadians Megan Oldham and Naomi Urness. Oldham, of Parry Sound, Ont., finished first in the qualifier round with a score of 171.75 while Urness, of Mont-Tremblant, Que., ranked seventh with 161.25. Oldham is seeking a second medal after a bronze in the slopestyle event.

Both of Canada’s curling teams will return to action after recent controversy. Brad Jacobs’ rink will face Czechia, while the women’s team of Rachel Homan takes on China and Japan.

And in figure skating, the duo of Trennt Michaud and Lia Pereira heads into the pairs free program in third place after yesterday’s short program. Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps are 14th following a return after having dropped out of the team event earlier in the Games after Stellato-Dudek sustained an injury while training.
