Vancouver Whitecaps extend defensive midfielder Cubas through 2027-28

By Canadian Press on February 24, 2026.

VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have locked up a key piece, signing defensive midfielder Andres Cubas to a two-year extension.

The deal, announced Tuesday, will see the 29-year-old Paraguayan international play for Vancouver through the 2027-28 season.

Cubas originally came to the Whitecaps via a transfer from French side Nimes Olympique in April 2022.

He’s since appeared in 136 games across all competitions for the club, starting in 127, and contributing one goal and 10 assists.

He’s helped Vancouver win four straight Canadian Championship titles, and an MLS Western Conference title last season.

Cubas has also been an important part of Paraguay’s national team, playing in 32 games and helping the squad secure its spot in this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

“Andres embodies everything we value in our group,” Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a statement.

“He is driven, relentless in his work ethic, and a true leader in our locker room, setting the standard for our younger players. On the pitch, he has been integral to our success and ranks among the very best in the league at his position.”
