Seattle Sounders down Vancouver Whitecaps 3-0 in CONCACAF Champions Cup play

By Canadian Press on March 12, 2026.

VANCOUVER — A pair of goals from Paul Arriola powered the Seattle Sounders to a 3-0 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in CONCACAF Champions Cup round-of-16 action Thursday.

Paul Rothrock came off the bench to round out the scoring for Seattle’s Major League Soccer squad, and goalkeeper Stefan Frei made one save for the clean sheet.

Vancouver, also an MLS club, controlled 64.5 per cent of possession across the game but struggled to great quality scoring chances and made uncharacteristic defensive mistakes.

The Sounders will host the back end of the two-legged aggregate in Spokane, Wash., on Wednesday.

The winner will face either MLS side Cincinnati FC or Liga MX club Tigres in the quarterfinals.

The result marked Vancouver’s first loss in 2026, coming after the team went undefeated over its first five games (4-0-1) of the campaign.

The ‘Caps advanced to the round of 16 after beating Costa Rican side C.S. Cartagines 2-0 on aggregate to open the tournament. The Sounders had a first-round bye as winners of the 2026 Leagues Cup.

Vancouver looked out of sync Thursday, missing passes and struggling to get shots on target.

Seattle got a prime chance in the 14th minute when ‘Caps defender Tristan Blackmon slipped and missed a loose ball inside the penalty area. Arriola picked it up at the top of the six-yard box and got a shot off, but Vancouver ‘keeper Yohei Takaoka turned it away.

The Whitecaps got their best look of the first half in the 31st minute off a shot from Oliver Larraz, who blasted a shot off from distance, only to see it skirt wide of the post.

The Sounders broke the scoreless deadlock just before the half.

Jesus Ferreira steamed into Vancouver territory and ‘Caps defender Mattias Laborda couldn’t catch him. The Seattle forward slipped a pass to Arriola, who fired a shot in to put the visitors up 1-0 at the 45-minute mark.

The Whitecaps controlled 60.8 per cent of possession across the first half, but shots were even at 7-7 and the Sounders held a 3-1 advantage in on-target shots.

A key Vancouver piece was not on the field to start the second half as Blackmon, the reigning MLS defender of the year, was replaced by Canadian Ralph Priso in the lineup.

The American centre back walked out to the sideline after play began with what appeared to be an ice pack on the back of his right leg. It was later announced he left the match with calf tightness.

The ‘Caps continued to dominate possession early in the second half but it was the Sounders who found the back of the net in the 58th minute.

Defender Nouhou Tolo sent a ball in and Takaoka was there to make a stop, but the ball bounced off the ‘keeper, then off Arriola’s leg and into the Vancouver net to give Seattle a 2-0 advantage.

The play went to video review for a possible offside, with officials deciding the goal would stand. Many in the announced crowd of 12,446 at B.C. Place expressed their disagreement with loud boos.

The ‘Caps came close to biting into the deficit in the 68th minute when Laborda headed a shot on target and Frei made a diving stop. The ball popped out to Priso who put the ball up and over the cross bar.

The Sounders capitalized on the counter, moving up field with pace before Rothrock — who came on for Arriola in the 62nd minute — tapped a shot in from the side of the net to make it 3-0.

Vancouver continued to press and made a series of substitutions seemingly aimed at sparking offence but were shut out for just the second time in 2026.

The Whitecaps will return to MLS play Sunday when they host Minnesota United.
