Tkachuk scores winner with 11.1 seconds left to play as Senators edge Islanders 3-2

OTTAWA — Brady Tkachuk put away the winner with 11.1 seconds left to play to lead the Ottawa Senators past the New York Islanders 3-2 on Thursday.

Tkachuk grabbed a loose puck in the crease and squeezed it past Ilya Sorokin as Ottawa rallied from a 1-0 and then a 2-1 deficit.

Shane Pinto had a short-handed goal to tie the game 1-1 for the Senators (35-24-9) in the second period and then Warren Foegele backhanded the puck past Sorokin 5:12 into the third period to tie it 2-2.

Rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer opened the scoring for the Islanders (39-25-5) early in the second period and Brayden Schenn beat Ottawa goalie James Reimer five-hole to tie it 1-1 2:02 into the third period.

Reimer made 19 saves to earn the win in net for the Senators.

Sorokin stopped 23 shots for New York.

The Islanders got on the board early.

Bo Horvat won the faceoff and Ryan Pulock passed it across to Schaefer who stepped into the circle and wired a shot past Reimer for his 50th point of the season.

Midway through the first, shorthanded, Pinto took a Tyler Kleven pass at centre and broke in and wristed a shot past Sorokin.

A scoreless first provided plenty of action.

Tkachuk and Anders Lee dropped the gloves on the opening faceoff in a fight between captains. Five minutes later, Ottawa’s Ridly Greig and Schenn also exchanged punches.

Reimer made a left pad save on what looked like a sure-goal for Casey Cizikas, while Sorokin made a great save on Tkachuk. The best save of the period wasn’t actually made by a goaltender.
