Huskies, Patriotes advance to U Sports University Cup men’s hockey final

HALIFAX — The host Saint Mary’s Huskies scored three unanswered goals in the first period and then coasted to a 4-1 win over the Windsor Lancers in men’s semifinal action at the U Sports University Cup on Saturday.

Player of the game Ben Boyd scored twice for the eighth-seeded Huskies, including an empty-netter at 18:35 of the third period that ended all hope of a Lancers’ comeback.

Matthew MacDonald and Reid Valade also scored for the Huskies, who outshot the Lancers 26-25.

Ray Hamlin scored a power-play marker for the Lancers in the third period.

The Huskies will play either the third-seeded UQTR Patriotes in Sunday’s final after they defeated the University of New Brunswick Reds 7-4.

The Patriotes scored four unanswered goals in the first period then coasted to an easy win.

Conor Frenette had three goals and three assists for the winners, while Felix Lafrance, Kassim Gaudet, Pier-Olivier Roy and Charles Beaudoin netted singles.

Braeden MacPhee scored twice for the Reds, while Cody Morgan and Thomas Larouche netted singles.

The Reds outshot the Patriotes 27-23.
