ELMIRA — The Montreal Carabins are the new U Sports women’s hockey champions.

Jade Picard put away the winner late in the third period as Montreal surged past the Concordia Stingers 5-2 on Sunday in the gold-medal game of the tournament.

Audrey Clavette and Emilie Lavoie supplied the offence for Concordia.

Maude Desroches made 40 saves for the win in net and goalie Jordyn Verbeek stopped 30-of-33 shots for the Stingers.

Earlier Sunday, Avery Thurston’s goal near the midway point of the first period stood as the winner as the UNB Reds held on for a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in the bronze-medal game.
