Great Sandhills in Saskatchewan is a wonder of nature that truly needs to be seen to be believed! This expansive area of rolling sand dunes offers a breathtaking and unexpected landscape in the heart of Canada. If you’re looking for a unique destination that combines natural beauty, fascinating history, and outdoor adventure, Great Sandhills should definitely be at the top of your travel list.

Let’s take a look at what makes this place so incredible.

What Are the Great Sand Hills?

Spanning an impressive 1,900 square kilometres, Great Sandhills is one of the largest active sand dune formations in Canada. Known for their desert-like appearance, these natural formations rise high above the surrounding terrain, creating a dramatic and otherworldly view.

The hills are surrounded by native grasses, sagebrush, and clumps of aspen and willow trees, giving the area a surprising touch of greenery. Wildlife such as mule deer and antelope are commonly spotted, making this a haven for nature enthusiasts.

How Old Are They, and How Did They Form?

These ancient dunes date back approximately 12,000 years to the last Ice Age. The movement and melting of glaciers left behind fine-textured sediments. Over time, winds carried these sediments to form the intricate and shifting patterns that we see today.

The dunes are still active, meaning they continue to move and reshape themselves with each passing breeze. This constant reshaping gives the Great Sandhills their dynamic and evolving charm.

What Can You Do There?

There’s no shortage of activities to enjoy in Great Sandhills. Whether you’re in search of relaxation, adventure, or educational opportunities, this destination has something for everyone:

  • Climbing & Exploring: Climb to the top of a massive dune for unparalleled views of the rolling sandscape. The effort is well worth the photo opportunities you’ll get at the summit.
  • Nature Photography & Stargazing: The unique landscape provides an incredible backdrop for photography, while the lack of light pollution makes it a prime spot for stargazing.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Birdwatchers will find rare opportunities to spot local species in the surrounding grasslands.
  • Walking Trails: Take a peaceful hike along sandy trails while enjoying the quiet serenity of this natural wonder.

Dos and Don’ts for Visitors

To ensure that your visit to Great Sandhills is both enjoyable and respectful of this fragile environment, here are some simple guidelines to follow:

  • Use the designated parking areas and walking paths to minimize your impact.
