Man facing assault charge after allegedly coughing on police officer

Lethbridge Police have charged a 27-year-old man with assaulting a peace officer after he allegedly coughed in the officer’s face.

On Thursday at approximately 10:30 p.m. police were called to a report of a domestic assault at a residence. Police attended a northside home and upon investigation discovered a male was in breach of the conditions of a release order.

The male was taken into custody and, during the course of his arrest, allegedly coughed directly into the officer’s face and told him he hoped he’d get infected. The male admitted he had been exposed to a person who had been quarantined as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A 27-year-old Lethbridge man is charged with assaulting a peace office and two counts of failing to comply with a release order. He is in custody awaiting a Judicial Interim Release hearing.
