A Lethbridge man accused of throwing a suspicious package into the police station Thursday then fleeing on a bicycle, had his case heard briefly in Lethbridge provincial court Friday.
Duty counsel lawyer Brett Carlson appeared for the accused, Kyle Glen Lowe, and simply requested the matter be adjourned to Monday. In the meantime, the accused remains in custody at the Lethbridge Correctional Centre.
Lowe is charged with arson, mischief, four counts of failure to comply with release conditions, and intimidation of justice.
Police say a portion of the police station was evacuated after a 29-year-old man threw a package into the front entrance about 10:15 a.m. Thursday.
Police deployed a mobile remote-controlled unit, which picked up a cardboard box and carried it outside. Police said the box, which appeared to be covered in messages written with black marker, did not contain explosive or hazardous material, and the police station was re-opened to the public about three hours later.
Police apprehended a suspect a short time later, who is also suspected of setting a fire in a planter outside the police station about 6 a.m. Wednesday.
“The Lethbridge Police Service takes these types of incidents seriously,” Insp. Jason Walper said in a news release Friday.
“The safety of our employees and community is our top priority. This incident required a collaborative effort from several units of the LPS in order to quickly and efficiently control the location and provide a safe environment. The deployment of our critical incident team and the Lethbridge Fire HAZMAT team allowed us to examine the package and determine the contents of the package did not contain explosive or hazardous material.”
