The University of Lethbridge has announced an initiative to encourage students to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
The ‘It’s Worth A Shot!’ contest gives registered students who receive a COVID-19 vaccination before Sept.9 the chance to win one of nine grand prizes of full tuition. Seven prizes will be awarded to undergraduate students at the Lethbridge campus, one to a student at the U of L’s Calgary campus, and one to a graduate student.
“This is an investment we are making in ensuring our campus is as safe as it possibly can be,” said university president and vice-chancellor Mike Mahon, in a press release.
“We know many in our community have been, or are planning to be, vaccinated, while others may need some encouragement to be vaccinated as soon as they are able. Our responsibility is to create a safe campus and contribute to the health of the Lethbridge and Calgary communities, and we anticipate this campaign will have a significant impact,” adds Mahon.
For students who have been investing in their education for a few years already, this announcement is especially important, as any help during this difficult time is appreciated.
Samantha Newton, an Art Studio major in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, will be going into her fifth year at the university in September. She says that any help along the way is always welcome, but after a hard year it has an even bigger impact.
“It would be huge to win that especially this year, because I’ve been looking for a job and haven’t found one. It would be really huge just to help supplement the cost of going to school,” Newton explains.
This initiative is also a good way to encourage everyone who was hesitant about continuing their education if it was going to be online, to continue to do so in person. As well as those that perhaps have delayed their initial enrollment to avoid an online education setting.
“I think it’s a great idea to get people motivated to get the vaccine for going back to school. I would really like to see everyone back in person, because it’s not the same being there without everyone else which I’m sure everyone understands,” adds Newton.
Additional prizes include student administrative fees, fine arts access fees, sport and recreation services fees for the fall 2021 term, as well as $500 gift certificates for the university bookstore, $20 Bridgebucks prizes and U of L branded socks.
The University will also run a contest for its faculty and staff members, with details to be shared with the U of L internal community in the coming weeks.
To collect their prize, winning students must be registered after the extended drop date in Fall 2021 and show proof of receiving at least one COVID-19 vaccination prior to September 8, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Only students who have their names drawn will be asked for proof of vaccination.
The draw for the contest will take place September 10, 2021. Further details about the contest can be found at https://www.uleth.ca/enrolment/worth-shot.
Applications for admission for the University of Lethbridge are being accepted until June 30, 2021. Information about how to apply to the University can be found at ulethbridge.ca/admissions.
