Crime Stoppers contest promoting fun and safety for Halloween

By Alejandra Pulido-Guzman - LETHBRIDGE HERALD on October 21, 2021.

A big part of Southern Alberta Crime Stoppers is community engagement and having some fun with the community. This year, along with a reminder about Halloween safety like reflective clothing and watching for kids out on the streets, Southern Alberta Crime Stoppers has decided to run a free entry Halloween Spooktacular contest, a photo contest.
They are giving away prizes in four different categories. Ages zero to 10 for costumes, ages 11 to 16 for pumpkin carving, ages 17 and up for pumpkin carving, as well as one for home décor.
To enter simply take photos and email them to with permission to post them for the winners. Specify what category you are entering in, and then they will do some random draws based on those categories and reward the winners with some gift cards.
“We just want the community to get out and be engaged and have some fun and celebrate Lethbridge, the beautiful city in southern Alberta and just participate in all the things that are around, whether it be fundraising opportunities for us or just simply enjoying a really fun day for the kids,” said Russ Kramer, president of Southern Alberta Crime Stoppers.
They try to run monthly campaigns. Some are more safety or crime oriented while others are more of a community event.
The pandemic has presented challenges to Southern Alberta Crime Stoppers in engaging with the public. Therefore, they have run a few different virtual events. In the past, they did a virtual scavenger hunt, where they had several sponsors, they put up some posters and did a “keys to the city have been lost” fundraising event. Participants were able to get clues to find locations to get the next clue to eventually solve the crime.
“We always want to thank the community for all of their support… We want to remind the community that we are funded strictly by donations, so it’s always nice if people would support us not only in this fun and free functions or events that we hold, but also in the fundraising functions or in donations through our website,” added Kramer.
