Train derails near Barons

By Lethbridge Herald on December 30, 2021.

Picture Butte RCMP photo - Rail cars rest along the sides of the tracks following a derailment Wednesday morning near Barons.

On Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., Picture Butte RCMP responded to a train derailment near Highway 23 and Township Road 120 near the village of Barons.
Fire personnel and emergency crews also responded to the scene. The train, which was northbound, is reported to have had an engine derail and a number of empty fuel cars tipped over. There were no injuries reported.
The derailed engine, as a result of the angle it was resting at, caused diesel fuel to leak from the fuel entry point. CP Rail as well as a Hazmat Team responded from Calgary.
Traffic on Highway 23 was re-routed to allow crews to work, and the public was asked to avoid the area of the derailment.
The Transportation Safety Board said they were assessing the derailment, but investigators were not going to the scene on Wednesday.
The cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
According to a release from Lethbridge County, the derailment posed no threat to the public.
