Judge doubles proposed sentence for mischief

Corey Adam Shaw was a free man. All he had to do was walk away from the Lethbridge Police Station after he was released Oct. 3 of last year on an undertaking by a justice of the peace.
On his way out of the police station, however, Shaw stopped at the door and slammed it open with such “an extreme level of force,” that it broke the door handle and latch, and broke a chip off the brick wall.
“As your honour can imagine, Mr. Shaw was then very quickly taken into custody,” Crown Prosecutor Adam Zelmer said Thursday during Shaw’s sentencing in Lethbridge provincial court.
Shaw, 34, pleaded guilty to a charge of mischief and was sentenced to 30 days in jail. Zelmer and Lethbridge lawyer Vincent Guinan had jointly recommended a sentence of 15 days, but Judge Grace Auger disagreed and doubled it.
“On this matter I’m not agreeing with the joint submission,” Auger said. “I think that a blatant disrespect for the police station deserves more than 15 days.”
Shaw also pleaded guilty to two more mischief charges, the first from an incident at a westside convenience store on June 1, 2021. Zelmer said Shaw was clearly agitated while he was talking on his phone and began kicking the front door until he smashed the glass. Damage was estimated at $3,000.
Three weeks later Shaw was at his girlfriend’s home in Coalhurst, and during an argument she became concerned for her child’s safety. She called police who arrested Shaw. Shaw returned the following day to retrieve some of his belongings and they began arguing again. Shaw began yelling at her children and the woman called police again. She and police told Shaw to leave and not return to the house, but he returned later the same day and was seen lying on the trampoline in the backyard.
Shaw was sentenced to 30 days in relation to his former girlfriend, to run concurrently with the 30 days for the offence at the police station. He also received an additional 15 days consecutive for the mischief at the convenience store, for a total sentence of 45 days.
“Mr. Shaw, you can’t go around damaging other people’s properties,” Auger warned him.
