G.S. Lakie Middle School’s Performance Arts showcase ‘Unite’ is coming to the Yates Memorial Theatre today featuring the Coalbanks Spanish Bilingual Choir.
G.S. Lakie artistic director Kristi Legge said they have rehearsed since September on and off due to absences but they are ready and excited to perform live once again.
“We feel very grateful to be in this space. We had a lot of guest choreographers come in from all over and we are really excited to collaborate with the Coalbanks Elementary School,” said Legge.
She said they have 36 of their students signing in the choir as well as a couple of lead singers.
“We also brought a company called Salsa Rica Productions and brought some professional salsa dancers from Calgary and they did some workshopping with us,” said Legge.
She said they went over to Coalbanks Elementary School and did some workshopping earlier this year as well.
“It’s been a great learning experience to be able to learn all these different styles of dance and have the people come in and actually teach us,” said Sophia Rejman, Unite performer.
Legge explained they decided to incorporate salsa dancing into their show because G.S. Lakie now has the opportunity to continue on with the Spanish bilingual program that is offered at Coalbanks Elementary and will welcome many children transitioning from that school.
“We didn’t know if we were going to be able to get that opportunity but it has been announced that we are,” said Legge.
She said that for those coming in from Coalbanks Elementary they will be doing a modified program incorporating Spanish into their studies.
The performance will take place at the Yates Memorial Theatre on today at 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased by calling 403-329-SEAT
