A Lethbridge man will remain in custody for at least a couple more days following his profanity-laced tirade in court Thursday.
Stephen Rene Geworsky, who appeared in court by CCTV from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre, said he hoped to have a bail hearing and get released Thursday so he could go to the hospital and see his doctor.
“I would like a release today if possible, if not, that’s fine,” Geworsky told the judge.
His lawyer, Ademola Emiloju of Calgary, said, however, he would be unable to run a bail hearing because he hasn’t yet received disclosure and his computer system has been down all week.
Geworsky, who up until that point had been calm, flew into a rage when the judge said he would not get a bail hearing at that time.
“You guys are all f–k’n screwed anyway,” Geworsky said. “Go ahead and lock me up and throw away the key.”
Geworsky continued to rant and rave, and yelled racial slurs at his lawyer when he told Geworsky to stop talking. He even threatened his lawyer before a corrections officer removed him from the CCTV room.
“I’ll f–k’n kill ya,” he said.
Geworsky had earlier in the hearing confirmed that he no longer wanted Emiloju to represent him, but later said he would accept his help if he could have a bail hearing.
“Seeing as how he’s here today, he could represent me here today, if he’s willing.”
Geworsky faces charges of robbery, shoplifting, shopbreaking to commit theft, mischief and performing an indecent act in public.
Following Geworsky’s outburst, Emiloju suggested the matter be adjourned until next week when he would be in a better position to “run whatever needs to be run.”
