Good things do happen despite the constant scroll of stories as we constantly move through the news cycle. News cycle may be a poor descriptor as the stories appear to be on repeat. Day after day the pseudo-czar Putin goes about obliterating of the Ukraine. We get new, though similar, revelations about residential schools, historical atrocities only now being addressed in the South and Central Americas, and corruption as usual in diverse places around the world. Largely ignored, though still taking place and occasionally mentioned as an afterthought are the continued oppression of minorities in China, Myanmar, and increasingly countries like India.
Interestingly the major media no longer uses the adjective “communist” to describe China, or sadly democracy for India. The mantra that only bad news sells is a false one.
If all you are offered is negative material that is all you can consume. People will, I’m sure, read many good news stories if they were actually offered to us.
So what is a newspaper reader or media consumer (of any kind) to do? Perhaps we should all make a conscious effort to try to spot the good news gems that are available. What about all the interesting, entertaining, or surprising things happening – and worth celebrating – in our own community?
We now have a permanent home for the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame where we can honour and celebrate our city’s rich history of sport thanks to the efforts of Dave McMurray, Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame chair and all those who worked with him.
We should acknowledge the promoters who brings a varied assortment of musical and comedy talent to Lethbridge and the talent displayed by the New West Theatre, and local arts and drama folks. Kudos to the Lethbridge Herald featuring the Gilbert Paterson Middle School, production on the front page. Another kudo for the Galt Museum and the Lethbridge Herald for the Flashback photos celebrating our architectural history as well as historic community events.
And of special note the Community Calendar that highlights upcoming items of interest. I was especially intrigued by a recent announcement by a local club for their May dinner and Dance. I wish I could attend to watch the members and “invirted” guests enjoy themselves.
Will handstands ensue? I really do look forward to future community calendar announcements.
