Gilbert Paterson student team up with Project Sunflower for Ukraine relief

By Justin Seward on June 16, 2022.

Gilbert Paterson Middle School’s Grade 8 band class of 30 kids are hosting a fundraiser concert in conjunction with the Troyanda Ukrainian Dance Club and Project Sunflower on Thursday night.
Project Sunflower is a local organization that was formed to assist the Ukraine efforts.
The concert is open to the community and voluntary donations will be accepted at the door for Ukraine.
“I just asked them this year what they thought and they were all like we have to fundraise for the Ukraine,” said Karly Lewis, the school’s band director.
“And I was just like, ‘ Wow, that’s pretty incredible,’ I mean these kids are 13 and 14 years old.”
The students were solely in charge of planning the whole concert.
“They are in charge of organizing,” said Lewis.
“So they do the emcee notes, they come up with the organization that they want to fundraise for. They also put together the music program – so you know all the music they’re going to play essentially for the concerts.
“And then we discuss how to create a band, like a music program to put on a performance with and how the music works together.”
When asked about the importance of students taking on a planning role for the concert, Lewis said, “I think students get a lot of understanding of responsibilities behind tasks.”
Attendees will be able to listen to concert band music that will be a combination of the woodwind, brass and percussion instruments put together.
Doors will open at Gilbert Paterson School at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday with the concert beginning at 7 p.m.
